The former soldiers' home in Hohenlockstedt, formerly known as the Lockstedt Camp, was designed by architect Fritz Höger and built in 1911. It was part of the civilian development at the military training area and was financed by donations from the Christian North German Men’s and Youth Association. The building was used for soldiers’ recreational activities. Since 2019, the “Högerbau” has been undergoing renovation by the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung, based in Hohenlockstedt, in collaboration with the Kiel-based architectural firm Archi-Tektur PartG mbB Stoike - Kerschkamp.

The tour of the building offers insights into the history of the former soldiers’ home and into the Arthur Boskamp Foundation’s plans for its future use. Renovation work began in the spring of 2022 and will continue through 2027. The building is open for tours as a construction site. As part of the renovation, the Foundation is also collecting visitors’ memories of experiences and events from the Högerbau, which can be recorded in the guest book provided.

Open Monument Day® is coordinated nationwide by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. The German Foundation for Monument Protection is the largest private initiative for historic preservation in Germany. Since 1985, it has been working creatively, professionally, and independently to preserve endangered historic monuments. Its holistic approach is unique and ranges from emergency rescue efforts for endangered historic sites to educational programs for schools and youth, all the way to the nationwide “Open Monument Day®” campaign. The foundation supports approximately 600 projects each year, thanks primarily to the active support and donations of over 200,000 supporters.
